Let's reconnect with the Empathy Exchange

Hi Reader,

I was looking back to see the last time you’ve heard from me and it’s been a hot minute (at least that's how the young kids describe the lapse of time.)

2023 was a bit of a whirlwind for a lot of us, and for me it was getting more settled since moving to Nova Scotia (hurricanes, floods, fires and snow storms) with lots of business travel to a few provinces, delivering workshops + trainings to many seniors' care organizations as well as association partners.

I also launched my podcast called The Empathy Exchange which now has 11 episodes. I wanted to create a podcast that brought both staff and families together in the same conversation, and through my solo and guest episodes, create an empathy exchange between both audiences, who sometimes struggle with communicating and working together. And yet, the staff and family connection is such a critical relationship where both sides could use a little more empathy and understanding.

I'm so grateful for my guests that have been generous with their knowledge and compassion, so that together we CAN revolutionize relationships in seniors' care!

I’d love for you to check it out. If you work in seniors’ care this is a great resource to share with your families in your email communication with them. If you’re a family member, I hope you enjoy the information and conversations as you continue on your journey in seniors’ care.

You can access The Empathy Exchange here or on your favourite podcast platform.

With gratitude,

Hi! I'm Deborah

I've spent the last 18 years in seniors' care, with 11 of those years as an Executive with Canada's largest seniors' care provider, and the last 7 years consulting, training and educating seniors' care homes and their families to build strong and healthy relationships as partners in care. I have this unique perspective because I also became a residents' family member three times, with my dad, mom and husband. I know how the business works and I know how challenging the emotional journey can be for families as well as staff who are providing the care. The relationship between staff and families is key to creating the best possible experience and outcomes for the resident, and having an intentional well designed onboarding process for families is key. I've created the "Family Relationship Method" with three approaches: Redesigning the Admission/Move In Process, Staff Training and Family Education. These methods help reduce friction and frustration between families and staff, and build trust, respect and understanding as partners in care.
