I've spent the last 18 years in seniors' care, with 11 of those years as an Executive with Canada's largest seniors' care provider, and the last 7 years consulting, training and educating seniors' care homes and their families to build strong and healthy relationships as partners in care. I have this unique perspective because I also became a residents' family member three times, with my dad, mom and husband. I know how the business works and I know how challenging the emotional journey can be for families as well as staff who are providing the care. The relationship between staff and families is key to creating the best possible experience and outcomes for the resident, and having an intentional well designed onboarding process for families is key. I've created the "Family Relationship Method" with three approaches: Redesigning the Admission/Move In Process, Staff Training and Family Education. These methods help reduce friction and frustration between families and staff, and build trust, respect and understanding as partners in care.
